Prawn Coconut Gravy / Eral Kulambu


Prawns are easy to cook and also very healthy and delicious. Prawns are rich in Protein, Iron, Zinc and Vitamin E. This Prawn coconut gravy is so delicious and the addition of coconut makes it even more richer and yummier. This is a very authentic preparation which includes brinjals and drumsticks during preparation, you can either use them or avoid them. But adding brinjals gives an authentic flavor. Goes great with rice, idli and dosa. Lets see how to make this spicy yummy gravy!!!


INGREDIENTS

  1. Prawns - 250 Grams
  2. Brinjal - 3
  3. Drumstick - 1
  4. Coconut - 1/4th of a coconut
  5. Big Onions -1 
  6. Tomatoes - 1
  7. Green Chillies - 3 
  8. Red Chillies - 8
  9. Ginger-Garlic Paste - 1/2 spoon
  10. Tamarind - 3/4 Inch ball size
  11. Curry leaves
  12. Pepper balls - One spoon
  13. Cumin Seeds/Jeera - One spoon
  14. Cumin powder/Jeera powder - 1/2 Spoon
  15. Pepper powder - 1/2 spoon
  16. Mustard - 1/4 spoon
  17. Fenugreek seeds/Methi seeds/Vendhayam - 1/2 spoon
  18. Salt
  19. Gingelly oil/Any edible cooking oil

PREPARATION METHOD

  • De-vein the Prawns and wash it well. Add Salt and Turmeric powder and keep it aside for few minutes then wash again and keep it aside.
  • Chop the Brinjal lengthwise, and drumstick into 2 inch long pieces.
  • Make a paste of the following and keep it aside;
    • Coconut pieces + Red Chillies + Pepper balls + Cumin seeds
  • In a pan add oil, after it heats up add Mustard seeds and let it splutter. 
  • Then add Fenugreek seeds, Chopped onions, Curry leaves, Green Chillies and saute well.
  • Now add Ginger-Garlic paste saute well, then add tomato and mix well.
  • Then add the Brinjal pieces and saute well.
  • Prepare Tamarind extract -  Soak the tamarind in water for 10 minutes, after ten mins mash the soaked tamarind well using fingers and extract the juice and keep it aside.
  • Now add the prepared Coconut paste and Tamarind extract and mix well. 
  • After the gravy start boiling add the Prawns and curry leaves and cook in low flame for 5 minutes. Add some water and adjust the curry consistency.
  • Heat another pan add Oil and after it heats up add Mustard, Fenugreek, Chopped onions, Curry leaves and saute well.
  • Add the above tempering mixture into the prepared gravy stir well.
  • Remove from flame immediately after tempering the curry and Serve after few minutes!! 
TIP: Soak Red Chillies in Hot water before grinding to make a smoother paste. This paste enhances the spicy flavor. Brinjal and Drumstick are optional. The gravy tastes good even without them!!

Delicious Rich Prawn Coconut Gravy is ready!! Serve with Hot Rice, Dosas and Idlis!!

Total Preparation time : 40 - 45 minutes
